{candy glitter cake}
Today I learned what NOT to do to a cake.
And then I learned what you totally SHOULD do to a cake, that is, if you’re obsessed with sprinkles and sugar sprinkles {candy glitter} like I am.
Lesson first.
A lovely six-inch layered Hummingbird cake, frosted and ready to be decorated.
(My imaginary friend) Oh wow, look at those lovely sprinkles IN THE FROSTING! OMG, that’s gorgeous! How did you do that?
(Me) Simple really, just pour some candy glitter in and stir before you frost!
Two Hours Later:
(Imaginary friend) WTF is wrong with that cake?!? Is that brown or beige? It look like freaking skin on your cake!!
Lesson learned:
Don’t put sprinkles in your cake frosting because your pretty cake design {including the pretty butterfly} and frosting will end up in the trash as soon as those sprinkles dissolve and turn your pretty-in-pink color into a burnt sienna color.
Conveniently, I don't have pictures but TRUST ME. It wasn't pretty.
Instead, do this:
Buy rainbow non-pareil, pink non-pareil, and gold sprinkles. Pull your kids’ magnets off the kitchen fridge (don’t even bother washing it off, dirt is good for them), stick the magnets on the cake then SPRINKLE LIBERALLY. Let dry for two hours.
Then slowly, carefully pull off the magnets and TA-DA!!
It’s beautiful!! Now cry momentarily into your new cake because you are overly emotional and distraught and remind yourself that come 10 pm when everyone’s in bed, you can sneak into the kitchen and eat cake without guilt or judgement. Because cake always tastes better when you’re alone and straight from the pan.
