Homemade smash cake
What’s the appropriate size for a baby smash cake? Well I guess that’s relative to how much you love your child. If you’re the world's greatest parent then you’ll not make but buy them a professionally baked and decorated four-layer, six-inch cake with perfectly molded fondant and pink macaroons imported from France.
But otherwise, you'll just make them a damn cake and hope it turns out.
I honestly wasn’t going to make the rose smash cake because it just seemed like a hassle. But with a round of practice it was actually easier to make than the crumb coat cake that I really wanted to but don’t have skill or know-how. So I iced it once with roses; it turned out crappy. I iced it again with colder frosting and… It looked okay so I went with it.
Here’s my tips:
Use ramekins. They're a little bigger than cupcakes but not too big.
I used two and cut them in half and iced them. I just did it to give a little more height.
Make sure your frosting is stiff. Add extra powdered sugar if you need to. Also, pop it in the fridge 10-15 minutes before you frost.
Add on a thin layer of frosting before you make the roses.
I didn't take pictures of the process because I didn't think the cake would turn out but this might help.
Start in the center then slowly start to turn counter-clockwise, and end at the point that you began.
Remember it's just frosting!! If you screw up then just wipe it off with a knife and put it back into your piping back and start over!
My first screw up…
Simply scrape off the frosting and try again!
Better!!
