Homemade party hats

I've always loved tea parties and I still fantasize about holding a real-life tea party where everyone brings a party hat and their favorite tea cup.

So until then, I made these!

Since they’re completely homemade you really have the option to customize them exactly to your style. Although I don't know how anyone can pass up lace and pearls. But if you decorate with paper, it turns out equally adorable!

You will need:

paper plates (the cheap flimsy kind)

pretty paper or homemade silk flowers

glue gun

stretchy lace for the ties

embellishments like lace, ribbon, pearls, etc.

Start with a simple, cheap paper plate.

Draw a line in half.

Draw a line directly down the middle.

Draw a dot in the middle.

Draw another point, about two inches off of the line.

Connect the dots.

Cut.

Now if you want to decorate with paper then use your new template to cut out that shape from some paper.

Bring the two ends together then dot with hot glue, at the top and the bottom.

It’s okay if it doesn’t meet up perfectly on the tip, it just makes it easier to stuff laces and ribbons into.

Now wrap the paper around and dot with liberally to keep it in place.

This part isn’t pictured but I found some stretchy lace at Walmart for about $3/yard and I was able to cut about 1/2 inch by 36” strands and glue those on either side of the inside of the hat and tie them together to keep the hat on. They work just as well as elastic but are a little softer on the skin and look pretty too!

Or you can follow this tiny tutorial to make silk flowers instead! Once you have the silk flowers made, with a tiny dot of hot glue they can be used to decorate party hats, cupcake toppers, or even wrapped gifts!
