Hi!

Welcome to my little space.

DIY unicorn shirt

DIY unicorn shirt

My little girl is realllly into unicorns. She currently has one unicorn shirt that I bought on a whim from Walmart, and now she wants to wear it errry day. Of course, now I can’t find any more unicorn shirts there or anywhere local, for that matter, so I decided to DIY one instead!

She really loves it, and of course it was impossible to get a picture of her in it since she doesn’t stand still for longer than .001 seconds and I’m pretty sure that it takes one full second for a camera to do it’s thing without all of the blur.

It cost me a total of $1, plus some supplies that I had on hand.

I’m really excited about the discovery of tole paints as fabric paint. Tole paints are acrylic paint and will not come off of clothing. They’re about fifty cents per bottle and come in an array of colors. Plus they blend beautifully so technically you can start with primary colors to blend and branch out from there. I also bought an assorted package of paintbrushes from Walmart and tried to use good judgement on shape and thickness of brush for the application of the flowers and unicorn, etc.

I mean, this is super elementary painting skills which makes it a great DIY project. Because if I can do it, I’m pretty sure anyone else can too!!

I recently discovered that Dollar Tree sells kids t-shirts in random sizes and colors! Yay for dollar t-shirts!! In case you really do screw up pretty bad. Although, I’ve come to find that painting on t-shirts is mostly pretty forgiving.

I also invested in a $2 bottle of gold paint. Because, you know, unicorns need gold horns or else are they really unicorns after all??

Oh, and meet my handy-dandy piece of cardboard. This gives me a firms surface and prevents bleed-through. Highly recommended.

Please don’t think that I pulled this design out of thin air!! I googled “unicorn shirts” and settled on this design. Methinks it’s cutesy.

Palette your colors…

Pick your brushes…

And pretend like you’re in grade school in painting class. It helps with the on-the-spot jitters.

Ta-da! Cute and cheap to do!

Funny side note: This shirt sadly sat on a hanger by her dresser for a month while I repeatedly tried to convince her to wear it because she’s so picky and stubborn. Not sure where she gets it… ;)
