diy Danish flair

Every year on the last weekend in May my small town always throws a huge festival celebration for all the Danes around here.

People come together for festivals for two reasons: spend exorbitant amounts of money on street food and to people watch. And if you're like me you take it as an excuse to wear a flower crown and pretend that you're hippie because you really haven't grown up yet.

This year I am extra excited because I have a really cute three-year-old and eight-month-old who get to suffer through my homemade garb because they're not quite old enough yet to refuse or understand embarrassment.

I've really been eyeing a Denmark tee shirt on Amazon and was about to order it when I remembered that I have red clothing paint, so it's time to DIY.

I took a plain white tee that I have, a blue play shirt for my boy, and a worn but cute light blue onesie for the bebe. I did the same process to all three shirts using frog tape and special paint. If you too are Danish then you are in luck because painting a Danish flag is actually super easy and straightforward. Simply put the tape down like this:

And then using a foam brush lightly paint the white spaces with red ink jet paint and let dry overnight. The next morning, carefully peel off the tape, and:

You have an awesome new Denmark tee that cost pennies to make!!

I also made me this flower crown because I am cliche to the point that it's downright disgusting. And I didn't want to leave the baby girl out so I made her a festive headband that turned out pretty cute, I think!

I had a tiny scrap of red felt leftover in my felt scrap pile so I carefully cut out two thin straight lines of white felt and glued them on like this:

Next I glued the flag onto a piece of slightly stretchy silk that I had lying around. That will be her actual headband.

Then I flipped it over, folded the sides in slightly, dotted with glue and pinched.

Then I flipped it over again and dotted with glue in the middle and pinched again.

Finally I wrapped a tiny scrap of lace around to complete the bow and topped with a small pearl bead. Cute!!

We're ready for stroopwafel.
