strawberry fleece hat

Very much so I wanted to make a strawberry-knitted hat for my little girl this winter.

But alas, talent for knitting is earned with time and grace, neither of which I have at this moment in time.

But I do have a sewing machine and half hour slot of time (at the very most!).

Is what’s liberating is the moment that a novice sewer realizes that she doesn’t necessarily need templates or patterns to make some simple diy baby and kids hats at home.

You only need something that is similar to that in a larger size as your template.

But before I continue let me interrupt this for a serious reminder to always shop the remnants section at your local fabric store!!

I found this red stretchy fleece at my Walmart fabric department for $1.29 and I was like, Oh wow thanks for reminding me that I needed this, Walmart! Now I don’t even have to track down one of your flighty sales associates to cut fabric that I probably would have paid more for anyway!!

I found my one of my little boy’s hats that was about 1-2 sizes larger than what I needed. Perfect because you need a larger size for the seam allowance and also because nothing is worse than making something for your kid and having it end up being TOO SMALL.

I cut the bottom part out to be a little longer just because I prefer it that way but you can simply keep yours the size of your template if you prefer.

Cut out two of these shapes. Then sew with a zig zag or simple/straight stitch from the forehead to the back.

Then make tiny snips all the way around. This helps it flex on the rounded edges.

Now pull the on the ear sides.

Measuring about 1 inch from the very top, sew a straight line across then snip off.

Next, fold the inside of each piece and sew all the way around. I could have skipped this step since its fleece but if it were cotton fabric then you would definitely want to do it so there is no frayed edge.

I don’t have a picture of this part but turn one of the pieces right side out and then merge it together with the other one that is still inside out. Then sew them together.

Cut out green felt leaves and buttons to adorn.
